English

“An inspiring, creative book-based approach, where children flourish in listening, speaking, reading and writing.”

Introduction

At St Mary’s, we are committed to nurturing a genuine love of language, enabling every child to become an articulate, imaginative communicator and a confident, independent writer ready for secondary school and beyond.

Our writing curriculum is shaped by the Literacy Tree programme, with its ‘Writing Roots’ approach placing audience and purpose at the heart of learning while fully embedding National Curriculum expectations. Carefully adapted to meet the needs of our school, each unit is built around high-quality, diverse texts that inspire creativity and reflect our community, encouraging children to see themselves as real writers with something meaningful to say. From the Early Years, where children develop essential motor skills and begin their writing journey through mark-making and phonics, through Key Stage One, where they build stamina and confidence across a range of genres, to Key Stage Two, where they refine their craft by considering audience, structure and language choices, writing is taught as a purposeful, engaging and expressive process. Through discussion and a text-based approach, pupils are motivated to write with clarity and imagination, while developing strong editing, grammar and presentation skills.
