Year 2 Spring Term 2018

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back following our Christmas break and Happy New Year.

Education is a partnership between home and school and therefore we would like to share the following information with you.

Learning in Year 2

The Year 2 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Year 1. The children will have a more formal learning environment in Year 2 but they will continue to learn through exciting topics so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. This term our cross-curricular topics are ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets’ (first half term) and ‘Wiggle and Crawl’ (second half term). Please see overleaf for a curriculum overview.

Our main aim will be to develop good work habits so that the children become more independent readers, writers and mathematicians as the year advances. There will be an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress later in the year but if you have any questions or queries about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to come and see us after school. There will also be an information meeting this term about KS1 SATS that take place in the summer term. More details will follow about this.

Children in Year 2 are developing readers and need daily practice. Please continue to take an interest in your child’s reading by discussing library choices, favourite authors, interesting characters, plots and different genres. Encourage them by asking questions about the story which will develop understanding. Inference knowledge in reading is a vital skill that is developing at this age. Please continue to read daily with your child. We will continue to monitor the frequency of reading at home.

Children will be continuing to follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics scheme. Please continue to support your child with learning their spellings that are sent home weekly.

Please continue to support your child with homework activities as it is an expectation that every child will complete their homework and return it on time. The work you do with your child enhances and reinforces the learning the children do in school.

What you can do to help:

  • Reading books and keywords should stay in your child’s reading folder so they can be listened to at school but please practise these regularly at home also.
  • Please support your child to complete their homework and learn their spellings each week.
  • Ensure your child comes to school in the correct uniform and that all their clothes are labelled.
  • Please send a bottle of water in with your child each day.
  • Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school. Earrings must be removed or taped up for PE. Indoor lessons will require the children to be wearing a T-shirt and shorts. Outdoor lessons will require trainers and a jogging top and bottoms. Please make sure your child’s PE kit is in school and that all items are labelled.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this letter.

Remember together we can make a difference.
