Spirituality at St Mary's

At St Mary’s School, we believe that spirituality is about developing a sense of wonder, curiosity and awe about ourselves, others and the world around us. It is about helping children to explore the things that give life meaning, to reflect on their experiences and to develop a sense of connection with themselves, others, nature and, where appropriate, God and faith.

We nurture spirituality throughout school life through Collective Worship, RE, our school values, time in nature, the arts, opportunities for reflection and through the relationships we build with one another. We encourage children to ask thoughtful questions, appreciate beauty and creativity, recognise moments of joy and challenge, and develop a growing understanding of themselves and their place in the world.

We use the Windows, Doors and Mirrors concept to help children explore and develop their spirituality:

Windows – opportunities to look out onto the world and discover something new. Children learn about different people, cultures, beliefs, experiences and perspectives, developing curiosity, empathy and respect for others.

Doors – opportunities to step into an experience and become actively involved. Children are encouraged to participate, explore, create, serve others and experience moments of awe and wonder for themselves.

Mirrors – opportunities to look inward and reflect. Children are given time to think about their own feelings, beliefs, experiences and values, helping them to develop self-awareness and consider what really matters to them.

Through our approach to spirituality, we aim to create a school community where children feel safe to wonder, question, reflect and grow. We want every child to develop the confidence to look beyond themselves, appreciate the world around them and recognise the ways in which they can make a positive difference to the lives of others.
