The National Curriculum states that:

Swimming and water safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

At St Mary's we offer swimming lessons at Furzefield Leisure Centre to all of our Y3 children. In the Autumn term, any Y4 children who do not meet the criteria above are offered top-up sessions, Y5 in the Spring term and Y6 in the Summer term.

Spring Term 2018:

Swimming Tuesdays 9th Jan - 20th March (excluding 30th Jan & 13th Feb)

Year 3 (Chestnut Class) and selected Year 5 pupils
