At St Mary's, we aim to provide the children with a high-quality science education, by giving them the foundation for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity. All pupils are taught the essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. They are encouraged to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world and what happens in it. An emphasis is placed on ‘Working Scientifically’ and through engaging practical activities and discussions, they understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. Wherever possible, Science lessons are delivered beyond the classroom.
Speaking and listening is highly valued throughout science lessons, as this not only encourages children to explore scientific vocabulary but also share and develop their ideas with others. We strive to develop a child’s questioning skills and an exploratory attitude to learning. The children are also encouraged to develop their ICT skills through relevant science explorations such as the use of data loggers and iPads. We also aim to have strong cross-curricular links with other subjects, especially English and Maths.
